Sophie Nazeri

Sophie is the Senior Program Coordinator in the Wildlife Department at Humane Society International, where she focuses on addressing issues including overexploitation of wildlife for trade and close encounters with wildlife. In her role, she leads a campaign aimed at advancing international and domestic protections for the common hippo through policy reform under CITES and ESA. Sophie also represents HSI in multilateral environmental agreements, like CITES, where she analyzes policy proposals, provides guidance, and engages in advocacy and lobbying efforts. 

 Before joining HSI, Sophie’s work focused primarily on avian conservation initiatives and held positions at the Macaw Recovery Network and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She holds a Master of Science in Environmental Policy & Management from the University of California, Davis and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Cornell University. In her free time, Sophie enjoys traveling, making ceramics, and backpacking with her pup. Sophie is from Los Angeles and currently lives in Sacramento, CA.
